What is an Internal Bra?

The internal bra is an innovative new surgical technique which Dr. William Albright specializes in. It provides internal support to your breast tissue and/or implants. It functions by securing your breast tissue or implants in a certain position. It can act very similar to a push up bra.

That biologic tissue or commonly referred to as mesh is secured to your chest wall which creates an anchored support to enhance the shape of your breasts. It usually takes a few weeks for this biologic tissue to fully integrate into your natural tissue. Although an actual bra is still recommended to be worn 24-7, the mesh will act like an "internal bra" because it will take on most of the weight of your breasts until scar tissue matures. Your breasts will be less likely to stretch and sag.

How does the internal bra improve implants?

In addition to holding your breast tissue or implants in place, the mesh can also address many concerns for women with existing implants. Examples include:

  • Implants placed too close together
  • Implants placed too far apart
  • Implants that don’t sit at the same level
  • Rippling
  • Contour irregularities
  • Capsular contracture

Can I get the internal bra with breast augmentation?

We recommend our patients consider an internal bra with breast augmentation or with breast lift. It will help support the weight of the implants from day one to lead to less sagging and issues longer term.

Adding the internal bra typically increases the cost by about $2.5k and the surgery time by around two hours. It does not add any additional recovery time or restrictions.

The internal bra is also a great option for women who’ve had weight loss or have skin that’s prone to stretching.

What actually is the mesh
Typically it is a synthetic material which is made of similar material to dissolvable sutures. Dr. Albright typically uses Galaflex which is an FDA off label product, and it will provide support for your breasts for up to one year and completely dissolve in two. In general the mesh will support your breasts until the scar tissue fully matures in 9-12 months. It will be replaced with scar tissue and collagen which will support your breasts.

Can an internal bra be used with breast lifts?
Yes, it can be extremely beneficial to help with healing for a breast lift.
